Gladys Lingle Melton
Gladys Lingle Melton, age 97, died Dec. 27, 2008, at Presbyterian Hospital. Mrs. Melton was born March 20, 1911, in Salisbury. She was the daughter of the late William Thornton and Beulah Brown Lingle.
Mrs. Melton was a graduate of the Granite Quarry High School and Salisbury Business College and retired as a Bookkeeper for Belk's in 1978 after 27 years of service. Mrs. Melton was the oldest member of Durham Memorial Baptist Church, Caring Heart Sunday School Class, she formerly taught Junior Girls and Intermediates Sunday School Classes over 40 years, and a member of the church choir and the WMU of the church.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, R. W. Melton, Jr.; and a daughter, Sarah Melton Short.
Survivors include a son-in-law, David B. Short of Charlotte; sister-in-laws, Eloise Melton of Burlington, and Glenna Lingle of Salisbury; brother-in-law, Dr. George Melton of Laurinburg; and many nieces and nephews.
Service and Burial: A service to celebrate her life will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Durham Memorial Baptist Church, Reverend Rick Schubert and Doctor Gerald Bearden officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Deacons of the Church. Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Durham Memorial Baptist Church, 1601 Toddville Rd., Charlotte, NC or to he Charity of the Donor's choice.
