James Cloninger Hart, Jr.

James Cloninger Hart, Jr. died on November 28, 2013. He was born on July 1, 1936 in Hickory, NC, son of James C. and Sue Honeycutt Hart. Jim was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Carolyn Hart Tingler. A graduate of Averett College and The Medical College of Virginia, School of Physical therapy, Jim practiced physical therapy for almost 50 years. During his career he was Chief PT at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC and Wake Forest/Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. In 1979, he moved to Florence to start the physical therapy program at the new McLeod Regional Medical Center. After adding sports medicine and occupational, speech, and pediatric therapy programs the department name was changed to Rehab Services.

In 1993, Jim moved to Surfside Beach and worked in private practice. At the beach, he became involved in the Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow before moving back to Florence in 2004.

Jim enlisted in the USAR as a private in the Infantry in 1959 and in 1964 received an appointment as a Captain in the Army Medical Specialist Corps. He was promoted to Colonel in 1984 and retired at that rank in 1996. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Gold Hourglass, among others. His last assignment was Mobilization Officer to the Chief of PT, Brooke Army Medical Center, Ft. Sam Houston, TX. He was a member of ROA, MOA, and AMSUS.

Jim is survived by the love of his life and wife of 52 years, Ann Breeden Hart and his children James C. Hart III of Florence, Linda Hart Temples (Joel) of West Columbia, Rebecca Hart Docherty (Dr. Harrell) of Florence and Dr. Jennifer Hart Davis (Chris) of Corvallis, OR. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren Rachael, Graham, AJ, Gatlin, Jackson, Palmer, Mei Mei, Boone, and Mariah, great-grandchildren Joseph and Nolan, and beloved French Bulldog, Louie.

Jim loved spending time with family on holidays and at the beach in summer. He also enjoyed writing his memoirs and playing golf in many different states.

Jim was a lifelong Lutheran and member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Florence where he served as President of the Lutheran Men's Group. Funeral services will be held at St. Luke Lutheran Church at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 2, 2013, and internment with full military honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Florence National Cemetery directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.

Family will receive friends on Sunday, December 1, 2013, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Jim's honor to St. Luke Lutheran Church, Florence, SC.
