Mildred P. Ward

Easley, SC - Mildred “Millie” Pickler Ward, beloved wife and mother, of Grace Avenue, died Monday, December 1, 2014 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Richfield, NC on July 10, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Travis DeWitt and Minnie Morgan Pickler. Mrs. Ward graduated from Richfield High School in 1942 where she excelled at basketball and served as team captain. Following graduation, she moved to Baltimore, MD to assist in the war effort by working in the blue print department of aircraft manufacturer, Glenn L. Martin. After the war, she returned home. In 1948, Mildred married the love of her life, Frank B. Ward, and became a homemaker and later a mother. She cheerfully moved where his executive textile career took them. They spent 16 years in the Spartanburg, SC area, 4 years in Auburn, ME and 46 years in Easley, SC. While living in Spartanburg, Millie attended Converse College.

Mrs. Ward was a member of Easley Presbyterian Church. She was an avid bridge player in numerous bridge clubs throughout her life. Former community and social activities included Pickens County Historical Society Executive Board Member for the Hagood-Mauldin House in Pickens, president of the Junior Woman’s Club, Easley Newcomers Club member, Girl Scout Troop Leader, Azalea Garden Club member, Pickens County Country Club member, and the Commerce Club of Greenville.

Mildred Ward was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel by the Commonwealth of Kentucky on Derby Day 1977. Among other philanthropies, she was a Cancer Society fund-raiser.

Most of all, Millie loved being a devoted wife, mother and friend. She completely cherished her daughters and they her. She was generous with her love and devotion. She loved traveling the world with her husband and family. Millie lived a happy and full life and brought joy to our world.

Mrs. Ward is survived by her husband of sixty-six years, Frank Bascom Ward, of the home; two daughters, Anne Ashley Rhyne Ward and Mindy Elizabeth Ward, both of Greenville; a sister, Syrella M. Pickler and a sister-in-law, Betty T. Pickler, both of Richfield, NC; a brother-in-law, James L. Ward (Eleanor) of Fort Washington, MD; and a niece, four nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Ward was predeceased by a brother, Spurgeon D. Pickler and a brother-in-law, William B. Ward (Frances).

Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 PM on Sunday, December 14, 2014 at Easley Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends after the service in the church parlor. Entombment will be at Springwood Cemetery in downtown Greenville at a later date.
