Bertie Nell Rankin

A memorial service celebrating the life of Bertie Nell Rankin, 79, of Elgin, SC will be held on Thursday, October 10, 2013 at 1:00 PM at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Camden, SC. Father Paul will officiate, with burial to follow at Quaker Cemetery. The family will receive friends, Wednesday, October 9, 2013 from 6:00-8:00pm at Kornegay Funeral Home Lugoff-Elgin Chapel. Memorials may be made in Mrs. Rankin’s name to the American Heart Association, 190 Knox Abbott Dr., Cayce, SC; or Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 1709 N. Lyttleton Street, Camden, SC.

Bertie “Nell” Rankin passed away after a sudden illness on Monday, October 7.She was born June 3, 1934 in Salisbury, North Carolina to the late Gilbert and Bertie Cranford Rousseau. [Nell was a 1952 graduate of Granite Quarry HS.] She was married to John M. Rankin. Nell served as the cafeteria manager for the Kershaw County School District for over 15 years, where all the children knew her affectionately as “grandma”. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother; and loved by all she came in contact with. She was well known for her excellent cooking skills as well as her sweet and loving nature. If you had a problem or illness, she was always there to lend a helping hand. She will be missed by many.

In addition to her husband, John, of 60 years; she is also survived by six children; Brian M. Rankin (Carol) of Conway, SC , Cathy Rankin Hanna of Elgin, SC, Caren Rankin Canup (Jim) of Florence, SC, Alan G. Rankin (Shirley), David W. Rankin (Diana), Jack M. Rankin (Susan), all of Elgin, SC; a step-son, Robert F. Rankin of Bristol, PA; 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren and sisters, Nancy Huneycutt of Granite Quarry, NC, and Betty Adkins (Ray) of Fayetteville, NC, and a host of other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her granddaughter, Vanessa Thompson; great –grandson, Xander G. Thompson, great-granddaughter, Ella Grace Weatherford, sister, Mary Frances Rousseau, brother, Thomas Rousseau and a brother –in- law, Harold Huneycutt.
