Notes for Myrtle Evelyn Gore
Evelyn Gilfillan

Evelyn Gilfillan passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, October 19, after an inspirational and rewarding life of 97 years.

Myrtle Evelyn Gore Gilfillan was born March 25, 1922, in a rural farm house near Longs, Horry County, South Carolina. Her parents were Edward Pinckney Gore and Myrtle Ellen Bryan Gore. She graduated from Loris High School in 1939, and attended Spartanburg Junior College (now Spartanburg Methodist College) and Wofford College in Spartanburg, where she met her soul-mate and life-long love, Carlton Gilfillan. She received her teaching certificate and taught elementary school in Horry County in the early 1940s.

She married Carlton on December 5, 1944, while he was on leave from the US Navy during World War II. After the birth of their first two sons, Carlton Jr. and Wade, they moved to Raleigh in 1948, and Carlton Sr. started work at Wayside Furniture House on Hillsborough Street. The family moved to Cary in 1951, and their third son, Marc, was born in 1953. During her life, Evelyn lived at 315 S Harrison Avenue (behind the old Cary Library) for 65 years. When her boys were old enough, she worked at Virginia Crabtree’s and Ellisberg’s Clothing in Cameron Village, and later at State Capital Life Insurance Company in Raleigh. During the 1960s she worked at Cary Branch Bank of Fuquay (Fidelity Bank) in downtown Cary and later with former Cary Mayor, Dr. E.B. Davis, DDS.

She loved her church and her friends, and was an active member of Cary First Baptist Church for 67 years. In 1969, she resolved to read the Bible completely through to obtain a better understanding of the Word. She ended up reading it in its entirety 33 times over the next 50 years. She often said that she had only missed two days (because of illness) in reading the Bible during that time.

Her husband, Carlton Sr., (“C.A.” or “Gil”), passed away in 2006, and Evelyn, a little shy in her earlier life, resolved to emulate his life by learning to pray and speak in public, and she became quite good at it in her later years.

Evelyn was a thoughtful, loving person who always had a positive outlook on life. She had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. Over the years, she made notes in her Bible of the things she thought most important in life. Her first two traits she listed came to define her life. First was that “Character Counts.” Who you are and how you live truly affect your life and those around you. You CAN be an influence to change your world. And her second was, “Every moment in your life is precious—don’t waste it.” Lying on her death-bed, we are sure she had no regrets.

She always thought you should look your best and present “your best foot forward” to the world—really an old-school, Southern Lady idea, that unfortunately is not as popular as it once was. She was a wonderful mother to three, grandmother to five, great-grandmother to four, and great-great-grandmother to seven.

She loved to travel and really liked road trips and beautiful scenery. She loved the United States, and our Veterans. She loved the outdoors, especially her gardening, and she showed a real talent for blending colors and landscape design. She was a talented seamstress, and often earned extra money in the early years by making custom drapes and curtains for her husband’s clients at Wayside Furniture House. Her greatest losses in her life were the early death of her son Wade in 1988 from kidney disease, and the death of her beloved husband, Carlton Sr., in 2006. She was a devoted care-giver to both in their times of need.

Evelyn was predeceased by her parents and her two brothers, Palmer Gore (1951) of Loris, South Carolina, and Jack Gore (2001) of Cary. Her first cousin, Bonnie Holt, was adopted by her parents and raised as their daughter, and still lives in Loris, South Carolina.

She loved her family. Her children are Carlton Gilfillan, Jr. (wife, Louise Taylor Gilfillan), Wade Gilfillan (1947-1988), and Marc Gilfillan (wife, Becky Madren Gilfillan).

Her grandchildren are Bryan Gilfillan (wife, Deborah Staley Gilfillan), Sarah Gilfillan Parunak (husband, Matthew Parunak), Robert Gilfillan, Carla Gilfillan, and Taylor Gilfillan.

Her great-grandchildren are Courtney Gilfillan French (husband, Jason French), Ashley Gilfillan Burnsed (husband, Cameron Burnsed), Nick Gilfillan (wife, Miranda Herbert Gilfillan), and Will Gilfillan (wife, Sarah Weiking Gilfillan).

Evelyn also has seven great-great-grandchildren.

A celebration of her life is planned for Saturday, October 26, 2019, at Cary First Baptist Church, 218 South Academy Street, at 11:00 am, with a visitation with family immediately before, starting at 10:00 am.

The family would like to thank the staff at Cary Health and Rehabilitation and at Transitions Hospice Care for all of their help and love for Evelyn.

Memorial Contributions may be made to First Baptist Church in Cary or Gideons International.
