Vernon Sherrill Ryan

Vernon Sherrill Ryan, 89, of Salisbury, NC passed away Thursday, June 22, 2017 at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center.

Born December 8, 1927 in Rowan County, he was the son of the late James Ryan and Zula Cutting Ryan.

Educated in the Spencer schools he graduated from Spencer High School, and was the second recipient of the NC Textile Workers Scholarship Program and attended NC State where he received a BS degree in textile engineering.

He was a veteran of the US Army during the Korean War. Mr. Ryan was a First Lieutenant with the Eight Army Inspectors General Unit in South Korea.

He was employed by Ciba-Geigy Chemical Company in Greensboro for 35 years before retiring.

Mr. Ryan was an active member of Central United Methodist Church, where he served as Treasurer.

Mr. Ryan was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Miller Ryan, on May 25, 2017 and his brothers, James Ryan, Eddie Ryan and Lamont Ryan.

Those left to cherish his memory are children, Tim Ryan and wife Lisa of Las Vegas, NV, Dr. Susan Catapano of Wilmington, NC, Melissa Wade and husband Jerry of Jupiter, FL, and Tony Ryan of Salisbury, NC. Also surviving are grandchildren, Mandy Kiger and husband Brett of Raleigh, Sara Catapano of Edinboro, PA, Nicole Catapano of New York, NY, Zack Ryan of Lexington, NC, Aaron Ryan of St. Louis, MO, Dori Ryan of St. Louis, MO, Ryan Wade of Jupiter, FL, Morgan Wade of Jupiter, FL and Savanna Wade of Jupiter, FL.

The family will receive friends from 4-6 PM Tuesday (June 27) at the residence.

A graveside service will be conducted at 10 AM Wednesday (June 28) at the Historic National Cemetery with the Rev. Don Mason, minister of Central United Methodist Church officiating. Military Graveside Rites will conducted by the NC National Guard and the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard.
