Notes for Crendell Allen Herrin
Crendell Allen Herrin

Crendell Allen Herrin passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at Salemtowne Retirement Community in Winston-Salem, NC, where he was a resident since 2020.

He was born September 13, 1940, in Albemarle, NC, where he grew up. He is preceded in death by his parents, Floyd Allen Herrin and Vivian Zona Smith Herrin.

He met the love of his life, Sue Story Herrin, in 1957. They were married for 61 years, during which they cherished each other as spouses and best friends.

He is survived by his wife, Sue; daughter, Carla Jenkins and husband, Will, of Essex Junction, VT; son, Douglas Herrin, and wife, Kathleen, of Floyd, VA; son, Charles Herrin and wife, Denise, of Trenton, TX; grandsons, Nathan and Eli Jenkins of Essex Junction, VT; granddaughters Madison and Willow Herrin of Trenton, TX; sister, JoAnne Lowder of Charlotte, NC; brother, Ron Herrin of Pendleton, SC; sister, Shirley Herrin of York, SC; and many nieces, nephews, and friends who loved him dearly.

He served his country in the US Air Force from 1960 to 1964.

Crendell’s passion and calling were flying airplanes. He began his commercial airline career with Piedmont Airlines in 1969. He loved flying so much that he often said it didn’t feel like work. When he retired from USAir in 1995, he was flying the Boeing 757 and 767 on international flights. His last several years with the airlines were spent in the training department. He was well-known as an excellent pilot, teacher, and co-worker.

Crendell had friends everywhere he went. Any time anyone needed help, he was there in a flash. He was a talented storyteller who loved a good joke and enjoyed entertaining; Crendell and Sue hosted dozens of gatherings at their homes over the years, giving family members and others the chance to spend good times together. He also liked traveling, and meticulously planned many a memorable trip which he enjoyed with family and friends. Crendell had been a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church since the early 1970s.

He could fix any kind of mechanical equipment and build almost anything. He loved woodworking and other shop projects. He lived in Winston-Salem, NC, and Mooresville, NC most of his adult life, and built a house for his family in each of those cities.

His last few weeks were spent surrounded by his wife, daughter, sons, and other family members. As we, his family, mourn his passing, we also celebrate his life, which he lived with great optimism, love, and courage. We will carry him in our hearts always, remembering the example he set and the joy he brought us. During his final days, he often remarked how wonderful his life had been. May we all be brave and fortunate enough to look back on our days on earth in the same way.

A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 12 at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. Masks are required and social distancing will be practiced. After the service, the family will receive visitors in Bingham Hall at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 1210 Bolton Street, Winston-Salem, NC.
