NORTH, S.C. - James A. Eagle, 91, of North, died Tuesday, April 10, 2012.

Mr. Eagle was born June 17, 1920, in Rowan County, N.C., a son of the late Albert T. and Mary Anna Canup Eagle. He married Maxine Cartin on Sept. 8, 1945.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of North. He was also a member of American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Gideons and Fishers of Men; and had served as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher and Sunday School superintendent.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1940. He served in World War II in England, North Africa, Sicily, Corsica and Italy and was awarded the European Theater Medal with 13 Battle Stars and two Presidential Citations. He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1963.

He worked for eight years with the U.S. Postal Service, then went to work for the State of Florida as a Grounds Superintendent for an institution for mentally-handicapped children. He retired in 1984 and moved to his wife's home state of South Carolina.

He wrote a gardening column for The Times and Democrat in Orangeburg, S.C., from January 1995 to December 2000.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine Cartin Eagle of the home; three sons, Donald Wayne Eagle and his wife, Diane, of Windermere, Fla., Terrance Lee Eagle and his wife, Tammy, of Apopka, Fla., and Bruce Edwin Eagle and his wife, Karen, of North; a sister, Marjorie L. Eagle Miller of Rockwell, N.C.; five grandsons, Jason Tindell Eagle, Michael Adam Eagle, Nicholas A. Eagle, Matthew Eagle and Kristopher Eagle; and four nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Moody V. Eagle; and a sister, Ruby Mae Eagle Lonon.

Service: Graveside funeral services will be held at Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, S.C., on Friday, April 13 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Sam Fordham officiating.

Visitation: The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home in North and other times at the home, 2137 Bull Swamp Road, North.

Memorials: May be made to American Cancer Society.
