Melvin Lee Wagoner

Melvin Lee Wagoner (“Pop Mel”), beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather passed peacefully on August 26, 2016, age 88, in Albemarle, NC.

Melvin was born on June 8, 1928 in Cabarrus County to the late Ethel Hammill and Harley Wagoner.

Spending time with his family and his caring extended family, brought him great joy. He loved helping anyone in need, making others laugh, spending time on his tractors and growing his garden. He was an active and faithful servant to his church. In the Army, he was proud to have been a part of building the early warning radar stations located in Alaska in 1955.  Before retiring, Melvin ran his successful company, S&W Trucking, in South Carolina.

Melvin is survived by: 3 daughters, Cynthia Wine, Melissa Gruver and Piper Repko, and Randall Molnar who was like a son; 6 grandchildren, Rachel Wine (husband Jason Fitchko), Gerry Lopez, Fleetwood Gruver, and Noah, Paul and Sarah Repko.

In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his beloved wives: Jeanette Whitley Wagoner and Vivian Herrin Wagoner, both of whom gave him many years of happiness. He is also survived by: stepchildren, Leah McIlwaine, Jo Anne Lowder, Shirley Swanner, Ronnie Herrin, Crendell Herrin, Susan Barbee, Joel Whitley; 15 step-grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

We will honor Melvin with a celebration of his life on Saturday, September 3, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church, 16592 St. Martin Road, Albemarle, NC.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. Martin’s Lutheran Church or Hospice of Stanly County.
