Evelyn Lutz Hill

Evelyn Lutz Hill, of Mountain Home, passed away Friday, April 16, 2004, at Pardee Memorial Hospital.

She was the daughter of the late Pearle E. Miller and Mamie V. Ritchie Miller and the wife of Harry Lutz, who died in 1962, and Albert Hill, who died in 1989.

A native of Stanly County, she had been a resident of Henderson County for the past 60 years and was a teacher and member of Henderson County Retired Teachers Association. She was the first woman to be appointed to the N.C. State Board of Agriculture and served for 12 years. In addition, she served on the advisory committee for the farmers market, was named 1985 Friend of Agriculture by the NC Department of Agriculture, inducted into the Western N.C Agricultural Hall of Fame, awarded The Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 1972, appointed to serve as President of NC Apple Festival Committee for 2004, and assisted annually with the WNC State Fair. Mrs. Hill was a member of the NC Farm Bureau Federation, member of Edneyville Grange, and a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, where she served as a member of the Finance Committee.

Survivors include her son, Wayne Lutz of Mountain Home; her daughter, Wanda Lutz of Charlotte; five stepdaughters, Hazel Baucom and her husband, Craven, of Monroe, Jean Dalton and her husband, Donald, of Edneyville, Mary Henry and Bub Hyder of Edneyville, Nancy Pryor and her husband, Scott, of Buford, Ga. and Sarah Hughes and her husband, Jim, of Asheville; one sister, Maxine Clayton of Richfield; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church with the Rev. Bryan Melton officiating. Interment will follow at Mills River Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Jackson Funeral Service.
