Brown Julian Sides

Brown Julian Sides, 92, of Rockwell, passed away Friday, October 27, 2017 after a period of declining health.

He was born January 31, 1925, in Rockwell, NC to the late Luther Earl Sides and Jessie Lyerly Sides. He was a 1942 graduate of Rockwell High School, attended North Carolina State University, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force, serving in Italy during WWII. Mr. Sides was president of Sides Lumber Company in Rockwell for 40 years and was known throughout Rowan County for quality home construction. He was a lifelong member of St. James Lutheran Church in Rockwell where he was a trustee and former member of the church council. A Mason and member of Keller Memorial Lodge #657, he recently received his sixty-year membership pin. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #112 in Rockwell for fifty plus years, a charter member of the Rockwell Civitan Club, and a member of the Rowan County Shrine Club. Until two years ago Mr. Sides was an avid golfer. He also enjoyed fishing at the coast.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Davis Sides.  

Mr. Sides is survived by his two sons, Julian M. Sides and wife, Terry, of Rockwell and Joe D. Sides, of Rockwell; two sisters, Betty Sides Beaver of Rockwell and Louise Sides Ridenhour of Salisbury. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Shelly Batts, Ashley Sides, Jodie Cross, Leslie Allen, Jennifer Smith, and Julian Sides and nine great grandchildren.

The family will greet friends and relatives from 12:45 PM until 1:45 PM on Tuesday, October 31, 2017, in the fellowhip hall of St. James Lutheran Church in Rockwell. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM in the sanctuary of St. James, conducted by Rev. Jason Huebner, pastor. Interment will follow in Brookhill Memorial Gardens in Rockwell with military honors.
