Robert “R.J.” Mabe

Robert “R. J.” Mabe, age 84 of 29227 Nelson Mountain Road, Albemarle, passed away on March 29, 2011 at Lutheran Home of Albemarle in Albemarle.

The family will receive friends Friday, April 1, 2011, from 6-8 PM at Hartsell Funeral Home in Albemarle. The funeral service will be at 11 AM Saturday, April 2, 2011, at Plyler Baptist Church with a 30 minute state prior to the service. Rev. Bryan Franklin will officiate. Burial will be in Plyler Baptist Church Cemetery. Military honors will be by the Stanly County DAV Chapter 12.

Born on June 20, 1926 he was the son of the late Derry McKinley and Lallie Bea Morton Mabe. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Rowland Mabe.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Eudy Mabe of the home; two sons, David Mabe and wife, Molly of Charlotte, and Mark Mabe and fiancée Karen Whitley of Bryson City, NC; one daughter, Marilyn Mabe of Charlotte; one granddaughter, Lauriston Mabe; and two grandsons, Robert Mabe, and Boone Mabe; one brother, Claudie D. Mabe and wife, Beulah of Albemarle; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Mabe retired as a Master Sgt. after 22 years in the US Army and US Air Force. During his military service, he received numerous awards including the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medals, and his Combat Infantry Badge.

Mr. Mabe received an associate degree from Biscayne Southern College. He was a charter member of the Millingport Mens Club and served for 28 years in the Millingport Volunteer Fire Dept.
