Milas Ira Hatley

Milas Ira Hatley, passed away August 20, 2015 at the age of 98, at his home in Locust.

Mr. Hatley was born January 11, 1917 in Stanly County to the late Arthur Hatley and Dora Huneycutt Hatley. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Zona Barbee Hatley, and his son, Michael Lee Hatley, Sr. of Locust.

He entered the Army in February of 1944 and served as Sergeant with the 115 Infantry in England, France, and Germany until wounded on October 18, 1944. He stayed in the hospital until February 1945 when he was sent back to Fort Bragg where he served until his discharge in May of 1946. Sgt. Hatley received a Purple Heart, American Theater Service Medal, EAME Service Medal and the WWII Victory Medal.

Returning home he and his wife, Zona, bought a home in Locust, raised two children and farmed for several years. After retiring from Union Carbide in Charlotte he and his wife opened a custom frame shop where they worked for many years. In later years he enjoyed yard work and gardening.

The family will receive friends on Saturday August 23, 2015 from 6 to 8 PM at Hartsell Funeral Home in Midland. A graveside service for family and friends will be on Sunday August 24, 2015 at 4:00 PM at First Baptist Church cemetery in Locust officiated by Rev. Tommy Ross.

Milas is survived by his daughter, Pattie White and husband, Benny of Locust; four grandchildren of Locust, Steven Ray Kennedy and wife, Lori, Amanda Kennedy Macon and husband, Ken, Michael Lee Hatley, Jr. and wife, Amber, Phillip Byron Hatley and wife, Courtney; daughter-in-law, Shirley M. Hatley; and eleven great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flower memorials may be made to Veterans Memorial, P. O. Box 190, Locust, NC 28097.

The family will be at Mr. Hatley's home.
