Notes for John Cameron Goodman
John Cameron Goodman

John Cameron Goodman, age 86 died peacefully at home on Saturday, August 5, 2023. Known as Johnny in his youth, he was born October 5, 1936, in Salisbury, NC, the first child of the late Ree and Willie Goodman.

Johnny lived a spirited youth in rural North Carolina, enjoying all things the wild outdoors offered. He shared his love of the North Carolina mountains with his family, teaching his children to fish, whittle, hike, golf and appreciate the beauty of the forest. A man of many talents, John was also quite capable as a pool player, supplementing his income as a young adult and delighting his grandchildren later in life. Forever remembered for his keen wit and intelligence, friends and family will continue to cherish memories of his animated story telling.

After graduating from Boyden High School in Salisbury, NC, John obtained his Bachelor of Science in Forestry from NC State, where he was President of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Following two years of active-duty service as an Officer with the US Air Force, he received his MBA from UNC-Chapel Hill. He then joined NCNB (now Bank of America) in 1963, serving the bank in numerous integral capacities during the advent of inter-state banking, including Senior Loan and Credit Officer and Raleigh City Executive. Afterwards, he moved to Delaware Trust Company (now Wells Fargo) in 1980 and retired in 1988 as Executive Vice President.

An avid reader, John served as Board Chairman of the Georgetown County Public Library in his retirement, and in 2004 was named South Carolina Library Trustee of the year.

John married Susan Raker McIntyre of Lumberton, NC in January of 1960. John and Susan enjoyed 63 years of marriage, moving frequently between Charlotte, Raleigh and Wilmington, DE before retiring to Pawley's Island, SC. They returned home to Charlotte in 2012, building a charming cottage at Sharon Towers where Susan still resides.

In addition to Susan, John is survived by his son, Cameron Ree Goodman and his wife Lori of Charlotte, NC, and their children Merrit and Raker, and his daughter, Lyn Goodman Shoop and her husband, Brett of Dewey Beach, DE, and their children Conner, Owen, and Evelyn.

Johnny is also survived by his sister, Kay Goodman Wilson who resides in their childhood home in Salisbury, and his brother, Thomas Ree Goodman, who resides in the family lake house, also in Salisbury.
