Enoch A. Goodman, Jr.

SALISBURY - Enoch Alvin Goodman Jr., 90, of 214 Confederate Ave., died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Goodman was born July 30, 1915, in Salisbury to the late E.A. Goodman Sr. and Frances Park Goodman. He was educated in the the Salisbury City Schools and was a 1938 graduate of Catawba College, where he played football, basketball and tennis and was named top athlete in his senior class. Mr. Goodman was a Naval officer during World War II serving in the Pacific. He served on the Catawba College Board of Trustees for more than 40 years, during which time he spearheaded the building of six major buildings, including the physical education center, with contains Goodman Gymnasium, a gift from him and his first wife, the late Dorothy Hedrick. Other recognitions and awards at Catawba include an Honorary Doctorate of Humanitarian Service and the Adrian L. Shuford Award for Distinguished Service at Catawba in 1984. The School of Physical Education and Athletics was named for him and his first wife in 1986. In addition, he and his children established the Dorothy Hedrick Goodman First Family Scholarship in her memory in 1989. Later, Enoch Goodman established the Lois Miles Busby Goodman Scholarship, and his family gave a gift of $500,000 to the Catawba College Capital Campaign, which was placed in the college endowment.

Director of Hedrick Industries and president of the Goodman Foundation, Mr. Goodman was former general manager of B.V. Hedrick Gravel and Sand Company. He was also a director for Carolina Stalite Co. and Carolina Tuff-Lite Co. and was very active in the Salisbury community. He served years on the Salisbury City School Board as its chairman and as a chairman of the Building Committee. He also served on the Rowan Memorial Hospital Board as its vice president and Building Committee chair for many years. He also served on the Board of Trustees for the old Security Bank and Trust Co. and was a director for the Salisbury-Rowan YMCA. He was a member of the Salisbury Rotary Club and a former director for Boy Scouts. More recently, he served as a trustee of First United Methodist Church, where he was an active member.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Hedrick Goodman, on June 4, 1989.

Survivors include wife Lois Busby Goodman; sons Jeffrey Vance Goodman and wife Dianna and Michael Alvin Goodman and wife Kay, all of Asheville; daughter Gail Goodman Settle and husband Dan of Fort Worth, Texas ; grandchildren Louisa G. Davis and husband Gene, Hadley, Sarah Vance, Catherine, Dorothy and Eleanor Goodman, Danny and Chris Settle, and Michael Settle and wife Brianna; great-grandchildren Lila and William Enoch Davis; step-children Deborah B. Coclanis and husband Peter, Dianne B. Roberts and husband Jim and Miles Busby and wife Sue; step-grandchildren Angelo and Alex Coclanis and triplets Linley, Mackenzie and Miles Busby II.

Service: A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Thomas L. Griffis, minister of First United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Dr. Carl R. Sachtleben, pastor of St. John 's Lutheran Church, officiating. A private burial will be held for Mr. Goodman at 1:30 p.m.

Visitation: The family will receive friends following the memorial service in the church Fellowship Hall. At other times, they will be at the home at 214 Confederate Ave.
