SPENCER - Carpenter L. "CL" Eagle, Jr., 77, of Spencer, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at the N.C. State Veterans Nursing Home, Salisbury.

Born Aug. 25, 1931, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Joyce Snider Eagle and Carpenter L. Eagle, Sr. He was educated in Granite Quarry schools, graduating from Granite Quarry High School in 1951, and attended Salisbury Business College.

Mr. Eagle was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. During the Korean War, he served on the USS Williamsburg, the Presidential Yacht and had the opportunity to shake hands with Presidents Truman and Eisenhower.

He was Purchasing Agent for N.C. Finishing Company for 39 years before retiring. He was a member of Coburn Memorial United Methodist Church, the Homemaker Sunday School Class, the Methodist Men and the Church Choir. Mr. Eagle was also a member of the Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post 342, was honored with a life membership with GARS and was a charter member of the Salisbury Bass Masters Club, where he served as Secretary/Treasurer for 20 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Thelma Silliman.

Survivors include his wife, Oma Lee Click Eagle; daughters Lisa Lynn Eagle Shuping and husband David of Claremont, Laura Eagle Steele and husband Jason of Cleveland; stepdaughter Michelle L. Weaver and husband Brian of Salisbury; stepsons Robert N. Waters and wife Annette of Martinez, Ga., James M. Waters and wife Melissa of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Charles M. Waters and wife Laura of Augusta, Ga.; sister Nancy Watson of Flat Rock; brothers Billy West Eagle and wife Marie and Glenn Floyd Eagle and wife Sue, all of Salisbury; brother-in-law Edmond Silliman of Concord; a grandchild, Shaun Gregory Shuping of Claremont; and eight stepgrandchildren.

Service: Funeral services will be conducted 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 7 at Coburn Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Larry Bumgardner and Rev. Anna Lee Allen officiating. The Salisbury Bass Masters Club and GARS will be seated in groups. Interment will follow at Rowan Memorial Park with military graveside rites conducted by the Rowan County Military Honor Guard.

Visitation: The family will receive friends from 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday at Coburn Memorial United Methodist Church; and at other times, the family will be at the residence.

Memorials: May be made to Rufty Holmes Senior Center, Coburn Memorial United Methodist Church, or charity of donor's choice.
