Notes for Brittain Page
[Frank D. Page] My notes say that the book containing the Britain and Calvin Page information, THE PAGE FAMILY IN NORTH CAROLINA 1685-1850, by Jesse M. Page, Jr., was published in 1987.

Jesse Page of Raleigh and compiler of Page records in NC believes that Calvin is the son of Brittain Page of Johnston and Cabarrus Counties. (Wake County was formed in 1771 from Johnston, Cumberland, and Orange Counties.)

The first Page in Johnston County was John Page who received a state grant in 1748 for 300 acres on the north side of Little River. Other Pages were Thomas, Frederick, Jessee, Tobias, William, Jonathan, Allen, Sion and Brittain.

In 1806 Thomas Page acquired State Grant #1912 for 70 acres on the south side of Black Creek, adjoining Calvin Jones and Robert Smith in the corner of Wake, Cumberland, and Johnston Counties. He sold the land to Jessee Page in 1808 but later acquired it again and sold the 70 acres plus an addition to Britain Page.

Johnston County tax records

1813 Britain Page, 110 acres, 1 poll
1814 Britain Page, 110 acres, 1 poll
1815 Britain Page, 110 acres, 1 white poll, 110 value
1816 Britain Page, 110 acres, 1 white poll, 200 value
1817 Thomas Page for Britain Page, 100 acres, no poll, no value

A deed dated 25 Jan 1814 records that Thomas Page sold to Britain Page for $100 110 acres on the south side of Black Creek, adjoining Calvin Jones and Robert Smith in the corner of Wake, Cumberland, and Johnston Counties. No record has been found of what happened to Britain's land after he moved.

Britain does not appear in an 1820 census, but in 1830 and 1840 he is in Cabarrus County. Britain Sr is not in the 1850 census, and no estate records have been found.

In July 1842 BRITAIN PAGE of Cabarrus Co was in debt to RICH J. MISENHEIMER for $8, SUDEVRICK & FAGGERT for $16, and $30 or thereabouts was owed on a note to DANIEL SIDES. On 25 July 1842 BRITAIN PAGE, for the sum of $1, signed a Deed of Trust with D. M. WALKER of Cabarrus Co whereby he sold to D. M. WALKER 75 acres of land lying on both sides of Lick Branch adjoining the land of DANIEL SIDES and GEORGE BLACKWELDER, along with a saddle and bridle, some corn and fodder, a cross cut saw, his farming tools and beds and furniture and all his household and kitchen furniture. In return D. M. WALKER became security for the above named debts. If the debts are paid by 1 Feb 1843 these obligations are void. If the debts are not paid by that date, D. M. WALKER is to take possession and, after advertising and giving 10 days notice, sell the property to the highest bidder, the terms to be cash. Out of the proceeds of the sale D. M. WALKER is to pay COOK & MISENHEIMER, SUDEVRICK & FAGGERT, and the balance to D. SIDES and all legal costs. The balance, if any, is to be returned to BRITAIN PAGE. WASHINGTON PAGE was a witness to this document.

The Deed of Trust was executed on 6 July 1843 by the Clerk of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions of Cabarrus County.
