Dr. Hutchins graduated from North Rowan High School as valedictorian of the class of 1968. While in high school, he was a Morehead Scholarship finalist and a gifted athlete winning all county honors in football and basketball and placing 2nd in high hurdles competition in the 1A North Carolina state championship meet in track and field.

He entered the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in chemistry in 1972. Dr. Hutchins continued on to the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, from which he graduated in 1976. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in 1979. He entered private practice that year and practiced internal medicine in Wilmington for the next 30 years.

Dr. Hutchins was a loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend. He enjoyed spending time with his family, reading, traveling, cheering for his beloved Tar Heels, and coaching girls? and boys? basketball at First Presbyterian Church. He spent many happy days with his family and friends on the sands at Wrightsville Beach.

Dr. Hutchins also had a special bond with his patients and often remarked how fortunate he was to have found a profession that he enjoyed so much.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Selden; his beloved children, Emily Selden Hutchins, Robert Preston Hutchins, and Elizabeth Katherine Hutchins; his brothers and sisters, Bonnie Hill, Patty Wirtel, David Hutchins, and Randall Hutchins and their families, and a special long-time friend, Gwendolyn Page.
