Ruby Frick Spencer

VIRGINIA BEACH — Ruby Elizabeth Frick Spencer, 84, died in her home July 6, 2005, surrounded by her loving family and caregivers. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, James Carroll Spencer and her two children, James L. Spencer of Leesburg, Va. and Shirley Spencer Hiser and one son-in-law, Michael Hiser, both from Virginia Beach, as well as two grandchildren and a great-grandson.

She is also survived by her sister, Helen Frick Wilson of Tennessee, and two sisters-in-law, Shirley Spencer Hufty of Illinois and Barbara Jean Collins of Virginia Beach.

Ruby was born June 20, 1921, in Franklin, Ky. Following graduation from Maury High School in 1939, she later graduated from Norfolk's Kee Business School. She worked at the Va. Dept. of Highways as a bookkeeper in the Pine Beach Ferry Division. She later worked as a bookkeeper at Thalia Exxon for 18 years.

Ruby was a member of the Va. Beach Chapter #75, Order of the Eastern Star; a member of the Chesapeake & Potomac Old Dominion Telephone Pioneers, Chapter 43, Tidewater Council. A 56 year resident of Virginia Beach, and former resident of Norfolk and Newport News, she was a member of Glennwood Park Presbyterian Church; a member of Lynnhaven Presbyterian Church and a charter member of King's Grant Presbyterian Church. She sang for many years in their choirs. She was also on the board of the PTA at the King's Grant Elementary School. Previously she worked as a volunteer at Lynn Shores Nursing Home. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 10, at King's Grant Presbyterian Church with a reception following in the church's fellowship hall.

The family has requested in lieu of flowers that all donations be sent in memory to the American Heart Association, the Diabetes Society or the Breast Cancer Awareness Society.

Cremation Society of Virginia is assisting with arrangements.
