Paul J. Hill

SALISBURY - Mr. Paul J. Hill, 82, of Salisbury, passed away at the W.G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury on Monday, April 8, 2013.

Mr. Hill was born on April 23, 1930, in Rowan County, son of the late Joseph Hill and Josephine Isenhour Hill.

He was a 1948 graduate of Rockwell High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Second Armored Division. He retired from Owens Illinois, Spencer.

He was a lifetime member of Liberty United Methodist Church and helped found the North Carolina Thumb Pickers.

After the death of his brother at age 12, Paul played the guitar in memory of him ever since. He was an avid beekeeper and was a member of the Beekeepers Association, a member of Faith American Legion and enjoyed gardening and taking care of his beloved cats.

Mr. Hill is in the Music Archive at Appalachian State University. The highlight of his music career was winning at the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival in Lacrosse, Wisc., as the National Winner.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Paula Hill, and brothers Frank and Jim Hill.

Mr. Hill is survived by his wife, Lena Hill, who he married April 8, 2000; son Norman Hill of Salisbury; stepson Jim Skiver and wife Terri of Liberty; daughters Glenda Wagoner and husband Dan of Salisbury; sister Esther Brown and husband Carl of Rockwell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Service: The funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 10 at Liberty United Methodist Church in Gold Hill conducted by Rev. Charlie Curtis, pastor, and Rev. Allen Lunsford of Union Grove. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites performed by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard and the N.C. National Guard.

Visitation: The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at Liberty United Methodist Church Wednesday, April 10.
