Notes for Grady Cress Shoe
Grady Cress Shoe

MOORESVILLE -- Grady Cress Shoe, 82 of S. Magnolia St., Mooresville died Sunday, March 11, 2007 at his residence. Born March 1, 1925 in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Arthur Hardy and Marie Cress Shoe. He was preceded in death by his sister, Juanita Coates.

In 2004, he was awarded the state of North Carolina's highest civilian honor, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.

A native of Salisbury, his high school career was cut short in 1943 when soon after his 18th birthday, he received a letter from the US Army notifying him that he was to report for duty on August 20. If asked what saved him during World War II, he would probably have told you that it was his fingers. His ability to type and play the piano kept him off the front lines and out of harm's way during the war.

He was discharged from military service on February 7, 1946 and returned home to Salisbury and his childhood sweetheart, Frances Park Lippard. After his first year at Catawba College, he married Frances on June 7, 1947.

Following his graduation from Catawba, he took a job with CIT Corp. as an adjuster. From CIT Corp., he became part-owner of Ford dealerships, first in Concord, then Chapel Hill, Huntersville and finally, Mooresville Motor Company. He eventually became sole owner of Mooresville Motor Company and settled into the Mooresville community with his family.

He became very active serving as the first chairman of Mooresville's ABC Board on which he was still serving at his death, in the Kiwanis Club where he served as President, the Chamber of Commerce where he served as President and Vice-President of Economic Development, the Mooresville Merchants' Association and the council of St. Mark's Lutheran Church of which he was a member and Sunday School teacher for 47 years. He served for 30 years, from 1969 to 1999, as an elected commissioner for the Town of Mooresville.

His other honors included Jaycees Boss of the Year, Kiwanian of the Year, Mooresville Outstanding Citizenship Award, the Ford Motor Company's President's Award and the Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award (he was the only dealer in NC to receive this award). He was also serving on the board of directors for BB&T in Mooresville and was a past member of the Carolina Transportation Compact. He also served as past chair of Lowrance Hospital and as past member of the Ford Consumer Appeals Board and the Selective Service System's Board #4, and the Better Business Bureau.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Shoe is survived by his children, Grady Jeffrey Shoe and wife, Gail of Mooresville, Randal 'Randy' C. Shoe and wife, Debbie of Mooresville, Ronald 'Ronnie' N. Shoe and wife, Melanie of Asheville and Jane L. Beaver and husband, Danny of Salisbury; brothers, Art and Dwight Shoe, both of China Grove and Wayne Shoe of Nichols, SC; and grandchildren, Grant, Leah, Seth, Meredith and Oliver.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Tuesday, March 13, 2007 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Johnny C. Cozart officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church's Family Life Center.

Memorials may be made to The Grady Shoe Family Endowed Scholarship Fund, c/o Catawba College, 2300 Innes St., Salisbury, NC 28144 or to the charity of the donor's choice.

The family of Mr. Shoe is being served by Cavin-Cook Funeral Home.
