Jane Eagle Hege, died July 6, 2017 at the Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House in Salisbury. She was the mother of Michael Lunsford of Bainbridge Island, Washington, and Brandon Lunsford of Charlotte.

She was the daughter of the late Joseph Charles and Etta Holshouser Eagle, and grew up in Salisbury’s Cannon Mill Village with her older brothers, Gene Eagle of Charlotte, Carl Eagle of Salisbury, Jerry Eagle of Summerfield, NC, and younger sister Ann McCanless of Salisbury. Another brother, J.C. Eagle Jr., died in 1938 and a sister Margaret Elizabeth died in 1954.

She was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she also earned a master’s degree in 1973.

During her first years out of college she lived and worked in Louisville and Hazard, KY, Charleston and Huntington, W.VA.; and Greensboro and Raleigh, NC. She returned to Salisbury in 1977. Her last 20 years of work were spent at the Salisbury Post, where she had worked briefly as a young woman. She retired in 2001.

In addition to her husband, her sons, and her siblings, she is survived by stepdaughter Amy Hege Atwell of Oak Island; stepson Jeff Hege of Norfolk; grandchildren Nellie Lunsford of Bainbridge Island Washington, Naima Hege of Norfolk, and Tucker Atwell of Oak Island; special niece and goddaughter Kate McDermott of Charlotte; and special nephews David McCanless of Rome, Italy; and William McCanless of Charlotte.
