Mildred Gardner Byrd

SALISBURY - Mildred Alexina Gardner Byrd, formerly of Faith Road, Salisbury, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, at Willowbrook Health Care, Yadkinville.

Born Jan. 14, 1915, in Rowan County, Mrs. Byrd was a daughter of the late Clifton T. and Clara Gantt Gardner of Faith. A graduate of Granite Quarry High School, she received a nursing degree from Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.

Mrs. Byrd was previously an office nurse for Dr. Fred Spencer and Dr. Ira Wentz, both in Salisbury; a staff nurse at Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury and Columbia, S.C.; and a staff nurse at Bethesda Naval Hospital, Bethesda, Md., and at the Military Officers Home in McLean, Va.

She was a former member of Shiloh Reformed Church in Faith; a member of First Presbyterian Church, Salisbury; a former member of Order of the Eastern Star 117 in Salisbury; a former member of Women's Club, Granite Quarry; and past president of Rowan County Heart Association.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Thomas Byrd; grandchild Syble Lynn Byrd Shirley; sisters Leona Gardner Safrit and Betty Gardner Smith; and brother Warren Gantt Gardner.

Surviving are her children, Larry Donald Byrd, Buford, Ga., Clifton Thomas Byrd, Blythewood, S.C., and Mildred (Dolly) Gardner Byrd Urdanick, Mocksville; grandchildren Donald Andrew Byrd and Renee Byrd-Lewis of Buford, Ga., and Elizabeth K. Byrd, Greenville; great-grandchildren Will Lewis and Alex Lewis of Buford, Ga., Jennifer Shirley Halligan, Houston, Tex., and Roy Gaskins and Stephana Manning of Greenville; and sister Juanita Gardner Somers of Faith.

Graveside Service and Visitation: 2 p.m. Saturday, Shiloh Reformed Church Cemetery, Cemetery Street, Faith, with the Rev. Jimmy Lancaster officiating. Visitation will follow the service.
