William H. “Bill” Lyerly, Jr.

SALISBURY - William H. "Bill" Lyerly, Jr., 84, of Arizona, and formerly of Salisbury, passed away peacefully Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010, at Hospice of the Valley in Sun City, Ariz., with family by his side.

Born May 16, 1926, in Salisbury, he was the son of the late Mattie McCombs Lyerly and William H. "Hub" Lyerly, Sr. A graduate of Granite Quarry High School, he joined the United States Army and served during World War II in the 42nd Rainbow Division. Bill was one of the first to liberate the Dachau Concentration Camp at the end of the war.

An active member of Shepherd of the Hills United Methodist Church in Arizona, Bill served on the Health & Wellness Committee for the past decade. Prior to moving to Arizona, Bill lived outside Washington, D.C., where he was employed by the FBI for over 40 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Johnson Lyerly; and sisters Katherine Lyerly Cope, Rachel Lyerly Benson and Alice Jean Lyerly.

He is survived and deeply missed by his daughter, Karen Lyerly Keen of Peoria, Ariz.; two brothers, Thomas Joe Lyerly and James Edward Lyerly (Bettie) of Salisbury; brother-in-law Vernon Benson of Granite Quarry; and grandchildren Ashley, Torrey and Ryder Keen.

Visitation and Service: Visitation is 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9 in the Fellowship Hall of First United Church of Christ, 207 W. Horah St., Salisbury. The service will follow at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary, with the Rev. Keith Hall officiating. He will be laid to rest at Rowan Memorial Park, with military graveside rites.
