Rachel Lyerly Benson

GRANITE QUARRY - Rachel Lyerly Benson, 84, of Granite Quarry, died Sunday, April 6, 2008, at Rowan Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

Born Dec. 21, 1923, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late William Herbert Lyerly and Mattie McCombs Lyerly. A graduate of Granite Quarry High School, she attended Salisbury Business College for two years. Mrs. Benson worked at the Pentagon for a short time, during World War II, and was a homemaker.

She was a member of First United Church of Christ, Circle 5 and was a Sunday School teacher for 17 years in the Primary Department.

Mrs. Benson was preceded in death by a sister, Katherine Cope, and a son-in-law, "Benny" Callahan.

Survivors include her husband, Vernon A. Benson, whom she married Oct. 23, 1946; son Randy Benson and wife Dale of Salisbury, and their children, Shanna Hinson, Shea Overcash and Sharla Benson; daughter Bonnie Shaw and husband Bill, and their children, Chandler and Haley Shaw; daughter Robin Callahan of Concord, and her children, Denver and Caylan Callahan; brothers William H. Lyerly, Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz., Thomas Joe Lyerly and James E. Lyerly; and a sister, Alice Jean Lyerly, all of Salisbury. Mrs. Benson's great-grandchildren are Elinor Hinson and Gil and Adair Shaw.

Visitation and Service: Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, April 9 at First United Church of Christ Fellowship Hall, with the service following at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary. The Rev. Michael W. Childress, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow at Rowan Memorial Park.
