Rachel Morgan Smith

Mrs. Rachel Morgan Smith, 80, of Salisbury passed away on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at Rowan Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Smith was born on April 24, 1931 in Rowan County, daughter of the late William Henry Morgan and Annie Eagle Morgan.

She attended East Spencer High School and was a member of Trinity Wesleyan Church in Salisbury. Mrs. Smith was retired from Hanford's Greenhouse where she graded roses. She also was a homemaker and enjoyed growing flowers, animals, and going on beach trips with her family.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Joy Trexler Smith who passed away in October 2001. She is also preceded in death by 4 sisters, 2 brothers and her grandson Nathan Elrod.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her sons, Gerald Smith and wife Jennifer of Salisbury, Richard Smith and wife Kathy of Oklahoma City, Ok, and Gary Smith and wife Ginger of Faith; daughters Teresa Elrod and husband Tim of Rockwell and Rita Smith of Salisbury; grandchildren Phillip, Dakota, Andrew, Amanda, Ryan, Brandon, and Colby Smith, and Shannon Elrod; one step-grandson Christopher Elrod; 3 great-grandchildren; and "Precious" her Trusty Companion.

Service: The Funeral Service will be at the Powles Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 11:00 AM conducted by Dr. Benny L. Vickrey, Sr., former pastor of First Baptist Church of Rockwell.

Visitation: The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM prior to the Funeral Service on Saturday.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Faithful Friends Animal Sanctuary (FFAS): 322 East Fisher Street Salisbury, NC 28144. or the Humane Society of Rowan County: PO Box 295, Salisbury, NC 28145.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to her caregivers Tracy and Irene who have been by her side for the last 5 years.
