Notes for Leo Junior Misenheimer
Leo Junior Misenheimer

Leo Junior Misenheimer, 98, of Hanahan, SC died Wednesday, June 28, 2017 after a very full and blessed life. He was married to the late Gertrude Esther Frick Misenheimer for 67 years. They met in fifth grade and were married April 18, 1942. They raised their three children in Alexandria, VA before retiring to Myrtle Beach, and then later to Hanahan.

Leo was born in Salisbury, NC on April 3, 1919 to the late Francis Delmar Misenheimer and Carrie Bulah Trexler Misenheimer. Early in life Leo learned the value of a dollar during the Great Depression and from the age of 10 he worked each summer at his father's sawmill. He soon realized that was not what he wanted for his life's work and graduated from NC State in 1941 with a degree in electrical engineering, and lettered in wrestling. He joined the Army Air Force, and earned a degree in meteorology from the University of Chicago in 1943. During WWII he was stationed in Montana, where he forecast the weather for the P-39 airplanes being flown by the Russians, from Alaska to Russia, to be used against the Germans. After WWII he went back to NC State on the GI bill and received a degree in Civil Engineering in 1948. After beginning his career with the Army Corp of Engineers, he was sent to the University of Florida and then to Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology in Tennessee where he completed post graduate work in Nuclear Reactor Science and Technology in 1958.

He was employed by the Federal Government from 1949 to 1973. He was assigned as the Resident Engineer for the construction of the first nuclear electrical power plant in the country at Fort Belvoir, VA in 1957. He later served as Chief Engineer and Technical Director over six nuclear power plants before becoming Director of Military Technology for the U.S. Army. He genuinely enjoyed his career and would often tell stories of his work. Two of his favorite stories were being lost in a blizzard on the Greenland ice cap, with a temperature of 40 degrees below zero, while in route to inspect an underground nuclear power plant. And another of being invited by President Lyndon Johnson to the Oval Office to congratulate him for his promotion within the Army Corp of Engineers.

His faith was very important to him and until late in life he was very active in his church. He was a founding member, Deacon, Elder and Sunday school teacher for Calvary Presbyterian Church in Alexandria, VA. He was most recently a member of Yeamans Park Presbyterian Church in Hanahan.

He enjoyed many hobbies throughout his life including oil painting, wood carving, going to yard sales with his Chihuahua, and working on genealogy and stories about his life. He always had numerous ongoing projects, enjoyed skyping with relatives, and took many computer classes up until the age of 94. He greatly enjoyed and appreciated the friendship of his McDonald's coffee group and Yeamans Park Presbyterian Church friends.

Leo is survived by two sons and a daughter: Leo Gary Misenheimer and his wife Aletha of Spartanburg, Stephen Timothy Misenheimer and his wife Carolyn of Richmond VA, and Mary Christina Sweatman and her husband Sonny of Hanahan; grandchildren: Jeromie, Brent and Brock Misenheimer and Ashley Ivill, Jason and Brent Sweatman and Jamie Strickland; and six great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister Phoebe Lakey of Mocksville, NC. Leo was preceded in death by his wife Gertrude, and by his brothers W.W. and Sam Misenheimer.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Yeamans Park Presbyterian Church, 5931 Murray Avenue, Hanahan, SC 29410. A private memorial service is being planned.
