John served in the 1st NC Continental Battalion, enlisting in Sept 1775, and fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain. He was also in engagements at Stono Ferry and Charleston, SC. From this service he got his nickname "Continental".

John and Catherina lived on a farm adjoining John's father near Granite Quarry. All of their descendants stem from Michael. Sophia did not marry, Anna and Elizabeth died young, and Polly married but was childless. Their grandson, Michael Alexander Brown, moved to Texas in Dec 1881.
