James Madison Dunn was killed in the Civil War at Hilton Head, SC. The body was never shipped home.

"Sherman arrived in Savannah in Dec 1864 and invaded SC in late Jan, with one of his advances being an amphibious route from Savannah up into Port Royal Sound. Fort Walker on Hilton Head Isalnd, however, was captured in late 1862 and became the base for the Union Army's Dept of the South. Sherman was actually on Hilton Head Island on Dec 21 when the federal army took Savannah. He was meeting there trying to arrange for ships to block William Hardee's Confederate troops from escaping across the Savannah River, but they had been building a bridge and escaped while he was away." Company C, 10th Battalion, NC Heavy Artillery
Joseph M. Dunn, private, born in Anson County and resided in Union County as a farmer where he enlisted at age 35, 19 Mar 1862 for the war. Present or accounted for through Oct 1864. Paroled at Charlotte 3 May 1865. [Obviously an error if this is James Madison Dunn, and the age is perfect. Union County was formed from Anson County in 1842.]
