Mamie Page records that Hardy was born 30 Sept 1830, but the 1850 census gives age 14 , the 1860 census gives age 24, and his parents were married 16 Aug 1834. Therefore, the year was either 1835 or 1836.
The 1900 census record states that Hardy was born Sept 1832.

Hardy was in Co. I, Ninth Regiment (First Reg. Cavalry) having enlisted in Stanly County 5 Feb 1862. He was captured near Richmond 29 June 1862, confined at Fort Delaware, and exchanged at Aiken's Landing, VA, 5 Aug 1862. He was captured again near Warrenton, VA 9 Nov 1862 and exchanged at City Point, VA 18 Nov 1862. He was appointed blacksmith in 1863. His POW record describes Hardy as 25 years old, born 1836, 5'7'' with black hair, grey eyes and sallow complexion.
In the 1870 census Hardy is a farmer living in Providence Township in eastern Rowan County, and in the 1880 census he is in Locke Township in western Rowan County. In 1900 Hardy and his family are in Spencer and he is a farmer.
